Turning Trash into School Cash!
Saving the Earth: One Juice Pouch at a Time

Garbage into gold, mow via discarded wrappers

Don't throw away those juice pouches at home; have your child bring them into school minus the straws and drop them off in the empty juice pouch bin by Ms. Mooney's room. Now we can help the environment and still raise funds for the school by turning them into "Kool Juicy Couture" lunch bags and totes.

Our volunteer sewers: Mrs. Mills, Mrs. Summers, Mrs. Gutierrez and Mrs. Gerritsen have been sewing up a storm. The ladies are swamped with orders and could use some help sewing. So far, they have created over 60 bags out of juice pouches collected this school year. Each pouch saves ten to twenty pouches from the garbage.

Our plan for the pouches we don't need involves a unique fundraising opportunity. Meadowview has teamed up with a company and have joined a new recycling program: The TerraCycle Drink Pouch Brigade.TerraCycle Cookie & Cracker Wrapper Brigade

In addition, Meadowview Public School has just started participating in a fascinating new recycling program, The TerraCycle's Cookie and Cracker Wrapper Brigade. Besides juice pouches, we are collecting the plasticized foil wrappers from cookie and cracker snack and full-sized packs. This kind of packaging is normally very difficult to recycle and usually ends up as garbage in landfills. Because they are difficult to recycle, every year BILLIONS of drink pouches and snack wrappers end up in dumpsters and landfills across Canada.

TerraCycle, Kool-Aid™ DelMonte™, Mr. Christie™, and Kraft Foods™ are working together to put an end to this awful loss of resources. As an eco-friendly innovator, TerraCycle is going to convert the used drink pouches and snack wrappers into unique fashion bags, tote bags, and pencil cases for kids and adults! TerraCycle takes them, cleans them up and turns them into new and useful consumer products like totes, backpacks and lunch bags.

This means the usually discarded packages are not going into landfills and, better still, the new "up-cycled" products use much less energy to make than items made from raw materials. For every juice pouch we send in, we get 2 cents. TerraCycle will donate 2 cents to our school for every juice pouch and wrapper we collect. So we're not only helping the environment, but we'll be helping our community school just by collecting something that would normally be considered garbage!

Here's all you need to know:

o We collect the empty plasticized foil wrappers from cookies like:

o Mr. Christie's Snak Paks (e.g., Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Teddy Grahams, etc.)

o Crackers (e.g., Crispers, Thinsations, Ritz, Kraft Dinner Crackers, etc.)

o We accept similar packaging from other brands, but please no chip bags!

o If your children bring snacks like these to school, they can put their empty wrappers in the collection boxes we have set up in the lunch room and outside Ms. Mooney's room.

o Send us the ones you use at home, too. We can accept any size foil cookie or cracker wrapper…the more we collect the better.

When our collection boxes fill up, TerraCycle gives us pre-paid UPS labels to send them back to their warehouse. So there is no cost to us. We get the credit of 2 cents for each piece we send in and they send our school a cheque twice a year. So we're not only helping the environment, but we'll be helping our community just by collecting something that would normally be considered garbage!

If you want to know more about this program you can visit TerraCycle's website: www.terracycle.ca. You can even sign up on the website to view our progress as a supporter of the school. TerraCycle's Cookie and Cracker Wrapper and Juice Pouch Brigade are an excellent example of the idea that, if we each do a little, we all do a lot! If you have any questions about this program contact us or visit TerraCycle's website. Together with your help we CAN make a difference!

Thanks for your support,

Ms. Mooney and the EcoSchools Team
